CGA Ontario contributes to the new Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre at U of T Mississauga – Challenging students to see more than numbers

MISSISSAUGA, SEPTEMBER 14, 2009 — The Certified General Accountants of Ontario attended a reception Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 at the University of Toronto Mississauga honouring its partnership with the university and its new Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre (Li Koon Chun FLC). The contribution provided by CGA Ontario supports the subscription, software and delivery costs for Reuters and Bloomberg real-time data feeds and the associated Bloomberg Terminal (hardware).

"CGA Ontario is both pleased and honoured to contribute to the funding of the new finance learning centre," said Doug Brooks, FCGA, chief executive officer, CGA Ontario. "We firmly believe in supporting post-secondary school students in their learning and in equipping them with the tools and resources necessary to both excel and succeed in their careers – challenging them to see more than numbers."

The partnership between U of T Mississauga and CGA Ontario will provide an opportunity for all students to access CGA Ontario programming and development opportunities through the use of the financial learning centre. Students from a breadth of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels will be able to discover the multiple pathways and certifications available within the fields of management and accounting.

The Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre represents a partnership between a collection of university departments, the department of management, economics, mathematical and computational sciences, psychology and the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre; the department of management and other affiliated departments. The software and hardware packages that provide the data for the centre also provide benefit in the areas of:

  • Connecting students and faculty to global financial markets and resources.
  • Providing exposure to global economic conditions and opportunity to enhance current financial knowledge through research.
  • Increasing educational opportunities, collaboration and connection with the external community, including local businesses, corporations and trade organizations.
  • Highlighting the importance of the study of management as a core competency across a number of disciplines.

CGA Ontario is a self-governing body that grants the exclusive rights to the CGA designation, and controls the professional standards, conduct and discipline of its members and students in the province of Ontario. Certified general accountants (CGAs) are committed to meeting the needs of their businesses and organizations with strategic insight, leadership and demonstrated abilities. In Ontario, there are more than 19,000 CGAs and approximately 9,000 students working towards their designation.
