Toronto Chapter

Toronto Chapter

In 1921, the Dominion Board of the then General Accountants’ Association (GAA) appointed a committee to visit Toronto and assist CGAs in forming its first branch outside of Montreal. With C.A. Mills as the branch chair, the GAA Toronto Branch was formed on November 28.

Throughout the next 20 years, GAA Toronto Branch held branch offices through Ontario including Durham (Oshawa), Hamilton, London, Niagara (St. Catharines and Niagara Falls), Owen Sound, Sarnia and Sault Ste. Marie. In January of 1952, a special general meeting of CGA Canada was held. This meeting, pivotal in the history of the national association, amended the national bylaws to refer to “provincial associations” instead of “branches.” Toronto Branch therefore became Toronto Chapter.

On August 2, 1957, the Certified General Accountants’ Association of Ontario received its provincial charter, granting control over the administration of a provincial education program. Toronto Branch became Toronto Chapter. Leonard Brooks, CGA served as both president of CGA Ontario and the inaugural chair of Toronto Chapter.
